Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore…

Nearly thirty years ago I spent some time in Seattle, Washington where I painted this impressionistic watercolor of majestic Mount Rainier. When I returned to Boston, I gave the piece to my painting mentor — my dear friend Mary — who displayed it in her home for three decades until she called one summer Saturday morning. She was dying and wanted me to have it back, so it wouldn’t get lost in the inevitable chaos.

We visted that very afternoon and said our goodbyes over stale graham crackers and warm bottled water. And I reluctantly took the painting with me. Mary was gone just three weeks later.

I now present it to you in her memory and the memory of her kind husband Juan. A monument to two lives of lore.

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore…

I painted this watercolor in the style of Van Gogh, imagining a rooming house parlor in Arles, Provence circa 1890. It even includes miniature replicas of two Van Gogh masterpieces on the wall — a mountain landscape and a very blue self-portrait, both from 1889.

His works will always be fresh and exciting to me. I hope I did him justice.

Provence Parlor Lore #1 ~ Sketch by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore…

This sketch had two sources of inspiration. The first was a photograph of a dark-gray tabby cat named Mercury taken by my friend Jackie in her angular apartment. The other was Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting of his bedroom at Arles in 1888.

I’m a big fan of Van Gogh (and cats too of course), so I’m eager to see how this imagined parlor from 19th century Provence translates into a watercolor. Stay tuned!

Saratoga Farmhouse Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore…

Farmer John Neilson and his wife Lydia built this iconic red house around 1775, just two years before the Battles of Saratoga would immortalize these Hudson Valley hills and change the course of the American Revolutionary War. The looming conflict drove the couple from their home, sending Lydia to stay with nearby relatives while John joined the fight against the British. The farmhouse did its part as well, serving as headquarters for several American officers including General Enoch Poor and none other than General Benedict Arnold (pre-treason).

Note that I exercised artistic license with a few small details of the structure — particularly the number of panes in each window — but it’s largely faithful to the landmark I saw on a recent summer visit.
