New watercolor ~ Chac-mool Lore

Chac-mool Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

This is Chac-mool, the ancient Mayan messenger to the gods. I first encountered this curious figure years ago on an expedition to the ruins at Chichen Itza deep in the Yucatan jungle of Mexico. You’ll find him there still, reclined in stony silence with a look as enigmatic as the boulder beneath him in this scene.

And yet he’s a colorful character too — at least that’s how I’ve chosen to paint him.

New watercolor ~ Red Sky Lore

Red Sky Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

Morning.
Spring.
An abandoned pueblo of sandstone and spirits.
One witness — a lore tree.

What does a red sky rising mean?
A god-sign?
An omen?
A warning?

We’ll see…

New watercolor ~ Door to the Lore #3

Door to the Lore #3 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

Legend says that the third Door of Lore stands in a land long ago and far, far away — a place lost in space where darkness rules. I can picture Lord Vader lurking here, or Kylo Ren, behind those rocks.

Where are Rey and Luke when you need them?! I’ve got a really bad feeling about this…

Door to the Lore #2 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

It’s another mysterious door from the World of Lore — this one set by a blue-green sea. Judging by the fallen columns, these ruins were abandoned ages ago by some lost civilization and its forgotten folk. And yet… would you dare to climb the stair and test the portal sleeping there?

New watercolor ~ Door to the Lore #1

Door to the Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

This surreal landscape had two sources of inspiration. The first was the ruins of an ancient stone doorway that I once photographed while visiting the Alsace region of France. The second, naturally, was the timeless time portal from the classic Star Trek episode “City on the Edge of Forever”.

Of course, this passage is not likely to lead to a Depression-era soup kitchen run by Joan Collins where James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock desperately race to fix a timeline broken by accidentally over-medicated Dr. McCoy. No — mine is the door to a stranger Lore.

New watercolor ~ Burro Lore

Burro Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

Many years ago on an epic quest, I came across this friendly donkey in the Black Hills of South Dakota, not far from Mount Rushmore. But in this painting, she’s made her way a thousand miles southwest to the edge of a Utah canyon where she seems right at home on a narrow trail in the morning sun. Anyone want a ride? Hop on!

New watercolor ~ Mohican Lore

Mohican Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

This watercolor began with a visit to the shores of idyllic Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, New York — home of 19th century author James Fenimore Cooper (and the Baseball Hall of Fame, of course). The view north from the lake’s southern end is epic, a romantic distant vista worthy of a scene in The Last of the Mohicans or one of Cooper’s other classic novels.

To help evoke that romance on paper, I reversed some of the painting’s colors, particularly blue and orange, with the hope of creating an aura of someplace lost in the mists of time. Is that Hawkeye and Uncas I spy out there?

New watercolor ~ Martha’s House of Lore

Martha's House of Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

This is the watercolor I painted based on my recent sketch of an early Mount Vernon, the great estate of General and Mrs. Washington on the hilly green banks of the wide Potomac. But in contrast to the black and white boldness of that blueprint, I chose to color the painting with a gentle palette, something a little more Martha than George. After all, who do you think really ran the house?!

New sketch ~ House of Lore

House of Lore #1 ~ Sketch by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s the latest Art of Lore

I made this spartan sketch in preparation for a watercolor painting of General Washington’s legendary home at Mount Vernon, Virginia. It reflects an earlier phase of the mansion’s history, circa 1770, prior to the construction of the adjoining colonnades and circular forecourt that you’d see on a visit there today.

I love the bold beauty of the building’s neoclassical design — a style known as Palladian after the influential Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Those elements are especially plain to see in such a simple blueprint as this.
