Watercolor of the day ~ Stones of Lore

Stones of Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

Not long ago during a summer sojourn in London, I took a day trip to the mythic site of Stonehenge, the silent circle of great gray sentinels that stands watch just a couple of hours — and thousands of years — outside of the city. It was more wondrous, more moving, than I’d ever imagined. An ancient ritual dance preserved mid-step in stone on the green rolling hills.

This painting is a simple song of that place, a poem of monoliths still ablaze with the spirits of those who set them here.

Inspired by a trip to Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula many years ago, I painted this scene of ancient Mayan imagery set beneath the blazing Mexican sun.

Watercolor of the day ~ Hen of Lore

Hen of Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

I grew up near my cousins’ dairy farm and have many fond memories of time spent in the pastures, cow barn, and hen houses. So I took great pleasure in painting this cheery, nostalgic watercolor of a plump country hen on parade in her sunny barnyard.

Now I’ll confess that the model for this scene (which I encountered in Cooperstown, New York a few years ago) was not actually a hen of many colors. But I think this plumage suits her well. Don’t you?!

Somewhere near Scotland’s Isle of Skye, an old crofter returns to his cottage with a load of peat for the evening’s fire. You’re invited for supper and a glass or two. No cozier place will you find tonight!

Watercolor of the day ~ Mother of Lore

Mother of Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

In this portrait, which explores the evocative contrast of complementary (or opposite) colors, a young mother’s thoughts drift for a fleeting moment as she cradles her fine newborn son.

It’s another nod to Van Gogh, who used these color pairs — yellow/purple, red/green, blue/orange — extensively in many of his famous works, including the portraits. I’ve adopted the technique as a staple of my watercolor style.

This Post-Impressionistic portrait depicts my sainted grandmother, Sadie Jones, seated serenely in a very Van Gogh style scene. A lady of lore she surely was!

Watercolor of the day ~ Tahitian Morning Lore

Tahitian Morning Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

I’d been looking at a collection of Tahitian paintings by Paul Gauguin when I put brush to paper one morning and imagined this seaside scene. But its statuesque female figure is more abstracted (without defined facial features) in the style of Post-Impressionist Maurice Prendergast, one of the great American watercolorists of the last century and a favorite of mine.

A tip ‘o the cap to two inspirational artists!
