I’ve long loved the Japanese art of Ukiyo-e, the colorful woodblock prints of such masters as Hokusai and Hiroshige. This watercolor, an invented new view of Mount Fuji, pays homage to them and their classic craft.

Love this John. Wonderful colour… I’m a writer not a visual artist, so my knowledge of printmaking comes only from what I’ve read. Did you use bokashi to make the graded tones? 🙂

Thanks so much, MD. This is actually watercolor on warm pressed paper and I used a simple wash technique to achieve the graded effect. Certain pigments tend to sit on top of the very smooth texture of warm pressed paper and dry in a granulated way, as you see here. Hope that answers your question. Cheers!
