Watercolor of the day ~ Mayan Sun Lore

Mayan Sun Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

Inspired by a trip to Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula many years ago, I painted this scene of ancient Mayan imagery set beneath the blazing Mexican sun.

Watercolor of the day ~ Hen of Lore

Hen of Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

I grew up near my cousins’ dairy farm and have many fond memories of time spent in the pastures, cow barn, and hen houses. So I took great pleasure in painting this cheery, nostalgic watercolor of a plump country hen on parade in her sunny barnyard.

Now I’ll confess that the model for this scene (which I encountered in Cooperstown, New York a few years ago) was not actually a hen of many colors. But I think this plumage suits her well. Don’t you?!

Olde Sod Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

Somewhere near Scotland’s Isle of Skye, an old crofter returns to his cottage with a load of peat for the evening’s fire. You’re invited for supper and a glass or two. No cozier place will you find tonight!

Watercolor of the day ~ Tahitian Shore

Tahitian Shore ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

I’d been looking at a collection of Tahitian paintings by Paul Gauguin when I put brush to paper one morning and imagined this seaside scene. But its statuesque female figure is more abstracted (without defined facial features) in the style of Post-Impressionist Maurice Prendergast, one of the great American watercolorists of the last century and a favorite of mine.

A tip ‘o the cap to two inspirational artists!

Watercolor of the day ~ Men of Malta Lore

Men of Malta Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

This is a study I once did, based on a photo from National Geographic, of a street scene on the island of Malta (presumably the place where they make Maltese Falcons). A group of men are gathered in the shade along an old stone wall, watching a game of bocce in the road. It’s an impressionistic take, but I hope I captured the spirit of these five spectators and their afternoon siesta.

Hidden Islands Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

I envisioned this alien dreamscape as a Jedi kind of place, with its lush green mountains hiding a deep crater lake and temple islands built upon it a long, long time ago. Imagine the lore this land could tell. Is that a lightsaber’s hum I hear?

Watercolor of the day ~ Big Sky Lore

Big Sky Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

This watercolor is loosely based on a big sky scene I once found on the outskirts of Yosemite National Park in eastern California. It’s a simple composition of a place dwarfed by the blue above. But I think those little white clouds steal the show.

Stylistically, my inspiration for this one came from the New Deal landscapes of the 1930’s — particularly the oil painting Valley Farms by Ross Dickinson, which you can see at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC. It’s plain American and a personal favorite.

Watercolor of the day ~ Golden Gate Lore

Golden Gate Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

I’ve been thinking about starting to work in a more abstract style and this Golden Gate Bridge scene is a small step in that direction. It’s the second time I’ve painted this famous view, looking south across the bay toward San Francisco. In this fresh take, I was going for a fluid, slightly twisted feel with vibrant colors and lots of texture.

It was a fun little exercise. I hope you like this new direction!

Watercolor of the day ~ Lost Mountain Lore

Lost Mountain Lore #1 ~ Watercolor by John Klobucher

Hello friends and art fans! Here’s a little Art of Lore

Nearly thirty years ago I spent some time in Seattle, Washington where I painted this impressionistic watercolor of majestic Mount Rainier. When I returned to Boston, I gave the piece to my painting mentor — my dear friend Mary — who displayed it in her home for three decades until she called one summer Saturday morning. She was dying and wanted me to have it back, so it wouldn’t get lost in the inevitable chaos.

We visted that very afternoon and said our goodbyes over stale graham crackers and warm bottled water. And I reluctantly took the painting with me. Mary was gone just three weeks later.

I now present it to you in her memory and the memory of her kind husband Juan. A monument to two lives of lore.
